Service Learning Opportunities

Purpose

The primary purpose of the Center’s Service Learning Opportunities is to provide a framework for students to gain direct, supervised volunteer experience in population health research projects.

In addition to gaining valuable experience in population health research, students will receive

  • Direct supervision from a Center staff person/researcher,
  • Opportunities to collaborate with a multi-disciplinary team of Center Scientists around population health issues,
  • Hands-on learning in their area of interest,
  • Recognition of contributions in Center communications (such as website, annual report, etc.),
  • Notice of community and professional development opportunities,
  • Access to library resources across institutions,
  • Letter of recommendation upon satisfactory completion of service learning opportunity, and
  • Possible course credit (upon approval from school administrators).

Service learning opportunities are based on availability of projects.

Eligibility

Students are encouraged to apply if they meet ONE of the following criteria:

  • Students must have a letter from their educational institution stating that they are required to volunteer or that their work at the Center completes an educational requirement, OR
  • Students must be from the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee.

Application Process

To apply, students should:

  1. Complete an application form found here.
  2. Attach a resume or curriculum vita, and
  3. Submit them electronically to:

    Virginia Zerpa-Uriona, M.P.H.
Service Learning Coordinator and Outreach Specialist
    virginia.zerpa-uriona@aurora.org
    (414) 219-7836

The application must be submitted by the deadline noted in "Important Dates" below.

Selection Process

Applications will be reviewed by the Center’s Service Learning Committee in terms of availability of projects, fit with the Center’s mission and vision, and interest areas. Applicants will be notified within two weeks of application receipt regarding whether or not a match has been identified. Selected applicants will be invited for an in-person interview to discuss a possible service-learning project. If both the student and Center staff feel the project is a fit, then arrangements will be made for the student to begin working on the project at the Center.

Applicants who do not find a match are welcome to check in again with the Center in the following semester.
