Health literacy is gaining widespread attention as its implications reach epidemic proportions. The inability to read, understand, and act upon health information can lead to devastating consequences for both patients and the health care system. Nearly 1 in every 3 patients has difficulty understanding health information, as well challenges navigating a complex health care system. This disconnect between how health information is communicated, and what patients understand, leads to poor health outcomes and billions of dollars spent in caring for these patients.

This presentation will provide an overview of health literacy; it’s prevalence in the population, its impact on health and the health care system. In addition, strategies and recommendations to address the problem will be discussed.

The presenter is Susan Kanack, ProHealth Care - Waukesha & Oconomowoc Memorial Hospitals
