In Wisconsin, the rate of infants born between 34 to 36 completed weeks of gestation rose 21% from 1990 to 2006. These late preterm infants are at greater risk for adverse consequences. They are less healthy than those born later in pregnancy and are more likely than term infants to suffer complications at birth, to require intensive and prolonged hospitalization, to incur higher medical costs, to die within the first year of life, and to suffer brain injury that can result in long-term neurodevelopmental problems. The forum focuses on the special needs of late preterm infants, their parents, and those who care for them. The forum also looks beyond immediate care to prevention and early intervention strategies.
Participants can look forward to: PURPOSE To recognize the unique needs of late preterm infants and identify strategies to promote optimal health. INTENDED AUDIENCE Physicians, nurses, certified nurse midwives and other advance practice nurses, dietitians, social workers, occupation therapists, developmental specialists, home visitors, pharmacists, and others who care for late-preterm infants in the hospital or at home.
