September is National Infant Mortality Awareness Month
The University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee, the Center for Urban Population Health, and the City of Milwaukee Health Departmetn are joining forces this month to provide continued information related to the growing infant mortality issue in our community.Here are the facts:Each year in Milwaukee there are an average of 200 infant deaths and stillbirths. Many of these deaths are preventable. In 2008 the overall infant mortality rate for Milwaukee was 10.7 deaths per 1,000 live births, but there are stark disparities hidden within that number. The infant mortality rate among African-Americans was 13.9, compared to a non-Hispanic White rate of 4.8.

Milwaukee Health Department Releases Community Health Planning and Policy Recommendations
The City of Milwaukee Health Department recently released a Planning and Policy Recommendations Report that will serve as guidance for the Milwaukee Health Department and Milwaukee’s public health partners in their work towards achieving the goal of making Milwaukee America’s Healthiest City again.

The Milwaukee LIHF wiki is a place for all Milwaukee LIHF supporters to join in an ongoing conversation about the planning process to create an action plan specific to Milwaukee.

babyfirst.com provides useful tools for parents, from a glossary demystifying NICU terms to articles on devices and therapies to testimonials of parents who have lived the NICU experience with their own babies. Practitioners can visit babyfirst as a single source for educational material, research papers and lectures from opinion leaders in all specializations of the neonatology field.

The University of Wisconsin School of Medicine and Public Health Oversight and Advisory Committee (OAC) announced the availability of grants through the Community-Academic Partnership Fund to promote the goals of Wisconsin's health plan, Healthiest Wisconsin 2020, and the Mission, Vision and Guiding Principles of The Wisconsin Partnership Program.

National Effort to Reduce the Risk of Stillbirth
First Candle has launched an educational campaign, "Kicks Count!", designed to raise awareness about stillbirth and the value of monitoring fetal movement. The campaign was implemented in response to the more than 25,000 stillbirths that occur in the US each year, with a primary goal of distributing 350,000 Kicks Count brochures.

For the third year in a row, Center for Urban Population Health staff, friends, and family will participate in the March of Dimes’ March for Babies to support research and programs that help moms have full-term pregnancies and babies begin healthy lives.

New County Health Rankings Give First County-by-County Snapshot of Health in Each State
The University of Wisconsin Population Health Institute, in collaboration with the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, has released the County Health Rankings - the first set of reports to rank the overall health of every county in 50 states.
