Using the Centering model developed by the Centering Healthcare Institute Inc., Aurora Health Care's Midwifery and Wellness Center (Eileen Nyhold, BSN, CNM) and the Aurora School-Based Health program (Victoria Carlson-Oehlers, MSN, RN, CPNP) developed a group prenatal care and education program at the school-based health clinic at North Division High School. This allows Nurse Practitioner Nyholt to provide more intensive care to each teen that would be available under the usual single patient model. In addition, teens have the opportunity to learn from each other and gain valuable support. The teens also receive critical education on motherhood issues as well as self-empowerment to determine their future.
The Center for Urban population Health assisted in obtaining a Wisconsin Partnership Program grant to establish the initial model, and is evaluating program outcomes.
