Background
Wisconsin's Comprehensive Cancer Control Plan (WCCCP) is an integrated effort of public and private partners to develop, and implement, a statewide approach to cancer control. One priority of the plan is to increase access to care by reducing economic, geographic, cultural, and systems barriers through the development of "regional partnership networks" dedicated to breaking down local barriers. The Center for Urban Population Health and the Partnerships for Healthy Milwaukee, with UW Medical Education and Research Committee (MERC) funding, initiated the first network in Wisconsin to provide a forum for those invested in cancer control in Milwaukee and Waukesha counties to collaborate and address the issues of this priority.
Purpose
The MRCCN provides a forum for professionals in cancer prevention, care and treatment to:
- Network
- Learn about member organizations and tour facilities
- Identify areas for partnership and collaboration among member organizations that address the health disparities that exist in the region
- Share information and resources available to the community
- Inform the Wisconsin Comprehensive Cancer Control Plan on the priorities of southeastern Wisconsin
Achievements of the MRCCN
- Established in June 2006 with 40 community stakeholders and health care providers
- Conducted a literature review summarizing the impact of healthcare coverage on cancer care and/or health outcomes.
- Present at the 2007 American Public Health Association Conference in Washington, D.C.
- Published the Expanding Pathways to Care: Assessment of Cancer Care Capacity for Milwaukee and Waukesha Counties.
- Graduated a team from the Healthier Wisconsin Leadership Institute.
- Successfully developed and received funding from UW-MERC for the Milwaukee Westside Colorectal Cancer Screening Collaborative.
Current Efforts
Milwaukee Westside Colorectal Cancer Screening Collaborative UW-MERC funding will allow the MRCCN to pilot an evidence-based intervention to address the health disparity in colorectal cancer screening in partnership with the Westside Healthcare Association, a federally qualified health center (FQHC). The project will utilize the strengths of the members of the MRCCN to build capacity of the clinic and staff to increase colorectal cancer (CRC) screening and follow-up while also improving the community's understanding of colorectal screening. Project components consist of:
- Developing a community-based advisory committee to guide the development and implementation
- Providing education and training on CRC screening guidelines to clinic staff, clinicians, clinic clients and the surrounding community
- Establishing an integrated CDC screening program within the clinic's chronic disease programs, in order to provide access to and utilization of CRC screening for 200 African American men and women
- Providing onsite screening support services, e.g. patient navigation, to ensure screening adherence and follow-up
- Evaluation of the program process and implementation.
Wisconsin's Comprehensive Cancer Control Plan Members are contributing to the development of the 2010-2015 WCCCP through workgroup participation this fall and in 2010 will begin to inventory their activities as it relates to the plan.
