Center Investigator Speaks at Wisconsin Local Food Summit

“There's a problem with food distribution in the United States, with areas of cities that don't have supermarkets," said Milwaukee physician Paul Hunter, assistant professor of family medicine at the University of Wisconsin School of Medicine and Public Health.

"From the public health point of view, ultimately we're trying to reduce complications of chronic disease through improving diet and exercise," Hunter said. "If someone lives in a neighborhood without easy access to good food, how are they going to improve their diet?"

Dr. Hunter in collaboration with SHARE Wisconsin and Center staff are currently working with local community based organizations who host Mobile Markets and local area researchers from UW-Milwaukee School of Public Health, the Medical College of Wisconsin and the UW Extension on a project to improve nutrition education at Mobile Markets.

Dr. Hunter joins farmers, public health officials and chefs at the fifth annual Wisconsin Local Food Summit at the Osthoff Resort in Elkhart Lake on January 13 and 14.

"It's not every day that farmers, public health officials and chefs gather around the same table to talk business."
