Finding Local Data
In 2018, the Center for Urban Population Health with financial support from the Milwaukee Health Care Partnership developed HealthCompassMilwaukee.org.
Health Compass Milwaukee is a dynamic website of the most current health indicators for Milwaukee County. It provides mapping, reporting, and comparative analytic tools to support research and planning for health care, public health, academic, philanthropic, and government sectors, as well as the broader community. The main goals of the website include:
The data are pulled from various sources including: U.S. Census Bureau, National Cancer Institute, WI Department of Health Services, Behavioral Risk Factor Survey, Family Health Survey, and many more.
Policy Link and Robert Wood Johnson Foundation call to disaggregate data because when data are broken down by detailed racial and ethnic subgroups, or disaggregated, a more representative picture of health emerges. In order to address health inequity, we need to better understand the situation. Depending on the data source or community, this is not always possible. Health Compass seeks to improve the data available to those who are working to address health and inequities in health. Most indicators are able to be broken down by race, gender, and age. We have been able to analyze and offer some indicators by socioeconomic status levels. Finally all indicators are available at the state and county levels and most can be broken down in smaller geographic areas like municipality and census tract.
It is the Center’s hope that providing access to data in this form will allow those who are working to improve the health of our community the data to make their case to funders and best target their research and interventions.
